Today is song two of my triple threat/trilogy, You Are an Heir by Donald Lawrence & Company. You know, I’m having such a blast going back through these songs and stories because they are actually stirring up something within me again! I hope they’re stirring up something inside of you too.

Back in 2011, these lyrics were the balm I needed for my fractured identity. The Father desired me to be whole. He wanted me to see myself the way He saw me, not just as a servant but as a child–an heir (Romans 8:17). I had spent my life being who I needed to be for those around me. I had been told most of my life in one way or another that who I was wasn’t enough. To cope with that sad reality, I either tried to blend into the background so no one would see my imperfections or adapt to those around me and pretend to keep from being ridiculed. Thus, burying my authentic self further and further beneath the surface. 

The real “Anji” was not light enough, pretty enough, smart enough, or “black” enough. She was too skinny, too serious, too churchy, too quiet, too nerdy, too much. By the time I graduated high school, I was just a shell of a person just trying to survive. By my mid-twenties, I was so lost I wanted to give up. 

When I gave my heart and life to God back in 1999, He told me he wanted to show me who He was and He kept that promise. Now, He was promising to show me who I was. I just had to be willing to continue on the journey. I imagined how Abraham must have felt when God showed him who he really was. When he told him that he would be a father of many nations; yet, he had not one child! I was excited to see what God wanted to show me but also leery of what it all entailed, but I trusted Him enough to keep going. And I give all thanks and praise to God that today, I am not only walking in the fulfillment of His promise to show me who I was—I AM HER!

Fam, What has God shown you about your future? What do you see? What are you speaking over your life? (Genesis 13:14-17, Genesis 15:4-6). Do you know who you really are? Do you know who God purposed you to be? (Genesis 1:26-28)

My prayer is that you allow this song to awaken you. I pray that dream inside of you that’s been laying dormant but you thought for sure was dead (Ezekiel 37:1-14) comes alive within you. Allow this song to stir up the gift within you. Allow it to fan the flame of your heart and set you ablaze with a renewed sense of hope and purpose. Allow it to open your eyes to a new reality where you are walking in your destiny. Allow it to remind you of who you were meant to be. You are enough! You are not a mistake. You are not a failure. It is not too late. God didn’t make a mistake when He made you. And the mistakes that you’ve made don’t negate who He has called you to be.

There may be someone reading this who doesn’t have a relationship with God so you don’t know if this is for you. Well, let me be the one to tell you, IT’S ESPECIALLY FOR YOU! You’re the one He’s been searching for (Luke 15: 1-7, John 3:16-17). God desires to be in a loving relationship with you through His son Jesus Christ (John 14:6, Romans 10: 9-10) and you can enter into that relationship here and now. Here is a simple prayer that you can repeat from your heart anytime, anywhere!

PRAYER: Father, in the name of Jesus, I come to you now, just as I am. I repent of my sins and I surrender my heart and life completely to you today. I accept Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior. I believe that He lived and died to pay the price for my sins and is seated at your right hand. Jesus, I ask you to come into my heart and life today. Live your life in me and through me. From this day forward I belong to you. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
